Bio:
Janine Wheeler is a Canadian artist residing and working in Utopia, Ontario. She received her BFA, majoring in Drawing and Painting, from OCAD University (Toronto, ON) in 2016, after completing a diploma in Fine Arts at Georgian College (Barrie, ON) in 2014. Her studio practice is primarily oil and acrylic painting on Yupo paper. Working predominantly within abstraction, Wheeler’s work explores intermediary spaces and intangible forms. She has exhibited in group exhibitions throughout Ontario, with a solo exhibition at the Aurora Cultural Centre (Aurora, ON) in 2018. In 2022, she received a Research and Creation grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Her work is held in private collections throughout Canada and the United Kingdom.

Artist Statement: I'm always interested in creating spaces in my work; spaces that can both allude to the physical or natural world as well as to a mental or invisible space. I'm also very interested in how those two types of spaces overlap in painting so that we are not sure if we are looking at the tangible or intangible. I'm endlessly fascinated with painting's ability to create illusion and depth, and in my own work: an environment. I want my work to float in obscurity while also nodding the viewer gently toward a feeling of knowing; a connection with something greater, contemplating the forms within the painting.
